I am having this same issue under KDE3, after having installed, and uninstalled KDE4. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling KDE3, but the problem persists.
After I login to a KDE session after about a minute or so, KDM all of a sudden goes to full CPU usage. This is also on a Vostro, but I believe it's a Vostro 200, though it is also a Core 2 Duo. This is on Hardy, 8.04 I believe this is an onboard Intel graphics system, with default drivers.
