As requested by Leann Ogasawara:

I have confirmed this to an issue in Ubuntu 8.04.1 (Hardy) with kernel
2.6.24-19-386.

This problem also affects the lastest linux kernel and at the time I
wrote this it was, 2.6.25.6.

Adding i8042.noloop to the kernel parameters fixes the problem in hardy
as well as the 2.6.25.6 kernel.

Maybe this kernel option should be added permanently to the kernel options
(from the stock setup) --
at least until the actual problem is fixed.
