After installing Ubuntu 8.04 from scratch on the Dell XPS M1330 neither the internal microphone(s) nor the microphone input work.
Adding the line options snd-hda-intel model=dell-3stack OR options snd-hda-intel model=5stack to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-utils and trying to modify the input source with the gnome mixer application does not solve the problem as expeced from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto, http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt and http://gentoo-wiki.com/Dell_XPS_M1330#Intel_Corporation_HD_Audio_Controller.
