I have the same problem with usb audio (mic on my quickcam 4000 pro) It hangs whenever a program reads from the usb audio device. e.g:
mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l:width=320:height=240:device=/dev/video0:forceaudio:adevice=/dev/dsp1 -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=64:mode=3 -o webcam.avi or the mp4live with audio from the usb audio. Unfortunately I cannot follow the discussion here. Just wanted to say that there are others that experience the issue.
