I'm using sun-java6 6-06-0ubuntu1... I'm also experiencing this bug while opening calc files:

On windows platform with standard OOo community 2.4.1 installation the same files are accessed and saved properly. Anyway, after this morning update to 2.4.1-1ubuntu1 I'm stuck with this new issue: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org- amd64/+bug/236676 and cannot obviously make more tries on the original problem.
