Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

I have always selected and pasted from pidgin to other windows. Today I
found that in the current version I'm using (1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2, on an up-
to-date ubuntu 8.04) inserts non-printing characters which look like
spaces but mess up the pasting into a shell.

For example, if you type

cat filename | awk '{print $2, $3}'

to someone in the IM (I was using AIM protocol, but I doubt it's
relevant), when they select and paste into a gnome-terminal window they
will find weird messages because the white spaces are not really white
spaces -- they have other junk.

If you paste into an emacs window you can see a bit of what went wrong:
some non-printing characters have ended up in that selected string.

** Affects: pidgin (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
