I have the same symptom, but with a slightly different setup. In my case, I have an HP Officejet Pro L7780 that is hooked up via my local ethernet. Whenever I use evince, in particular, to print something, I get an extra blank sheet of paper at the beginning.
I'm currently using Ubuntu 7.10. Adobe Reader does not seem to have the same problem. And, I just discovered that the problem with evince goes away when I tell it not to reverse the order of the output. I can do that when I'm just printing a few pages, but that's not really practical with a big print job.
