As far as openoffice is concerned, a workaround that works for me, is to
run via SSH:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ssh -Y localhost
[EMAIL PROTECTED]'s password:
Linux gao 2.6.24-17-generic #1 SMP Thu May 1 13:57:17 UTC 2008 x86_64

The programs included with the Ubuntu system are free software;
the exact distribution terms for each program are described in the
individual files in /usr/share/doc/*/copyright.

Ubuntu comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by
applicable law.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ soffice
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

I run Kubuntu; amd64 / ati fglrx.

As far as the Gnome enhancements is concerned:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ aptitude search openoffice |grep gnome
p openoffice.org-gnome - GNOME Integration for OpenOffice.org (VFS,
v openoffice.org-gtk-gnome -
v openoffice.org2-gnome -
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ aptitude search openoffice |grep gtk
p openoffice.org-gtk - GTK+ Integration for OpenOffice.org (Widge
v openoffice.org-gtk-gnome -

There are no "un0wn3d" files in the home directory:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ find /home/linh/ -uid 0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Lastly: there is another user on this laptop, with the same problem. I
did not try creating a new profile.
