I think SGI is just wrong here, as demonstrated by your experimental
evidence. Sorry, we have tried but cannot offer the option you ask for.
XFS skates very close to the edge of what POSIX permits in terms of file
system syncing, too close for grub-install's purposes.

The way this is presented is definitely problematic, I agree. From
ubiquity's point of view, the only plausible fix here is likely to be to
ensure that it's possible for LILO to be installed instead.
