I doubt this is related to the video driver in use. I am suffering this problem frequently on Hardy (updated to almost-8.04.1) and on an Intel i915GMS (using xserver-xorg-video-intel).
Note that gtk-gnash keeps eating away CPU in the background, even if Firefox has been quit long ago.
