I have the same problem.

I didn't install mscorefonts, but I copied my fonts from my old windows
in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/windowsfonts. I have temporary removed the
folder. It didn't help.

A windows version of OpenOffice can read the files without problems. I
don't understand it. I tried to export the files as a pdf, but the
mistake were there too. And when I printed the document the characters
didn't display correctly.

But I'm lucky: My important document is displayed correctly.

I noticed something: I wrote my text and it was good. A saved the file.
I closed OpenOffice. Later I load my file and it was displayed wrong.

OpenOffice version: 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1
Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
