#1 & #3 : openoffice.org never gets past the splash screen. This occurs
when running it from the Kmenu, or from the shell. That, I guess, would
be when making a new file.
#3 Even when running it with an explicit filename from the shell (e.g.
soffice foo.ods) the same thing happens.
#2: How would I go about identifying the version of the JRE?
from dpkg -s openoffice.org-java-common, I get version 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu1
