I believe I am experiencing the same or similar problem with Ubuntu
v8.04" Hardy" running on a Dell Inspiron 710m with the TI PCI7420. The
system locks if either an SD or MMC card is inserted in the on-board
slot. I have the Issue currently with 2.6.24-19, but this behavior is
identical to what I experienced with -18, -17, -16, and one release
prior.

Insertion of a 16mB MMC card displays a Canon icon on the desktop before
the system locks; insertion of a SanDisk 2Gb SD card locks the system
within two seconds. Only a power off-power on sequence will recover.

No information appears to be recoverable from the locked system, but
either card can be inserted while watching a root terminal in recovery
mode, and error messages can be seen flying past, but not read. The
system can be continued to a normal boot *if* the card is removed first;
otherwise, the system will lock in the root terminal.

I saved the dmesg contents after two such continued boot sequences and
attached them below along with the device identification (at the bottom)
from lspci.

I hope this is useful despite being a complete novice to Ubuntu and
Linux, hoping to learn enough to avoid Vista when this machine finally
dies. The card reader is the only device that thus far hasn't worked.
