hmmm... Stupid question - you are running it from GUI, not console?? You may also try to run dexconf first, just to reset xorg.conf to whatever it thinks is default and then try again. (it looks like displayconfig-gtk couldn't get screen size - I'd report this as a separate bug. It's still a package in Hardy (and works fine for me), so it can be reported :-).
