On a clean install of Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) from the official CD, on
a uniprocessor system, I just got several crashes during the first
update of the system (via the Update Manager):

For example, setting a new version of update-manager itself (quoted from
the update details log):

Setting up update-manager (1:0.87.27) ...
*** glibc detected *** scrollkeeper-update: corrupted double-linked list

In my opinion, this makes the Ubuntu installation risky to use for the
"normal user", i.e. I don't know the side-effects of these crashes at
update time, and I will have to reinstall Ubuntu from scratch when this
bug is resolved.
