1) apt-get source system-tools-backends 2) cd system-tools-backends-2.6.0 3) ./test-backends.in UsersConfig ...and post the output Also, could you have a look for any errors in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages, particularly related to DBUS. Could you also try booting without 'quiet' and 'splash' to see if there are any error messages during boot. When you run users-admin, you should see a process with the command line '/usr/bin/perl /usr/share//system-tools- backends-2.0/scripts/SystemToolsBackends.pl -m UsersConfig' appear, as this service should get started by DBUS when you launch users-admin.
