The hotkey has a very complex handling and generally goes to the ACPI related to the BIOS - if that is not very well recognized in your Linux installation it will NOT work !
I have seen major differences with b43legacy from one revision of the card to another - 4306 rev3 works acceptable but 4306 rev1 is quite bad.
