When I suspend my laptop, it sometimes hangs with a blank screen and a
flashing cursor in the upper left corner. The system still responds and
I can use the keyboard to get back to X, use it as normal and so on, but
it won't suspend (and the suspend led doesn't stop blinking). It seems
as if the sync process, automatically executed by pm-utils, hangs in D
state (and as such isn't even killable) and stops the system from
suspending. When trying to shutdown after this incident, it won't
finish the process as well and remain turned on. I waited for at least 6
hours for the process to finish.
Regrettably, I am not sure when this problem occured the first time. I
am sure it wasn't there in Gutsy (at least I didn't notice, there were
other issues with suspend), it only appeared after the update to Hardy,
maybe after I bought and installed my external harddrive.
Also, I cannot imagine that this problem is specific to suspending but
could occur in other situations as well. I only noticed it while
suspending until now because I rarely shut my laptop down, reboot it or
unmount my external drive. I didn't have this problem with unmounting
flash sticks or something either.
I reported it for the linux package as sync only tells the kernel to
flush the write cache as far as I know.
For the records: I use an up-to-date Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 with a
2.6.24.19.21 linux-generic kernel.

dmesg output will be handed in as soon as the bug occurs again I am not
so stupid and hardreset the laptop, lspci -vvnn attached, I can deliver
/var/log/syslog as well if you're interested, but there really isn't
anything helpful.
