Same trouble here, although I'm upgrading to 8.04 rather than installing from afresh. I've for 700MB RAM and 1Ghz or thereabouts on an old HP Compaq nx9010.
Its my girlfriend's computer and I've effectively broken it by clicking on upgrade distribution and now I'm going away for a month or so and she is left laptopless. :( Very disappointing that I so often have problems upgrading ubuntu :( Is there anyway I can just downgrade again?
