I have had some success by taping up the touchpad, instructions here:

If it is a permanent fix, then this is not a software issue, and the
best we could hope for in Ubuntu is a user-directed touchpad re-mapping
workaround.  I'll see how it goes in the next couple of weeks and report
back.
