I have the same problem, pngnq crash on version check ([EMAIL PROTECTED], svn rev 9242, hardy amd64).
I've tried with the fix proposed on the related debian bugs (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=491860), it fix the problem for me. after rebuilding the package (with the fix), pngnq -V shows: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ pngnq -V pngnq 0.5 Compiled with libpng 1.2.15beta5; using libpng 1.2.15beta5.
