I've done some testing with the Intrepid Alpha3 Live-cd and with the most recent Hardy kernel.
Hardy: Sometimes when booting from a complete poweroff the noise exists. It might appear when suspend/resume:ing. Intrepid: When I booted the livecd I couldn't hear the noise but after a suspend/resume cycle it appeared.
