Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grub
(I don't know if this is grub or grub-installer) It would be nice if grub-install could default to always setup the boot sector of the / or /boot partition to be chainloadable also (as a backup). * Recovering from an overwritten MBR would be as easy as chainloading the /boot or dedicated grub partition. (With a DOS mbr in place only the boot flag of the /boot partition needs to be set.) * update-grub could by default generate simple menu.lst entries (root <grub partition>; setup (hd0)) to setup or recreate MBRs (hdX) or floppies (fd0) to boot /boot/grub * It is very convenient to have a dedicated grub partition to boot parallel installations of a distribution or different OSes. * A dedicated /grub partition on hd0 can be created by mounting a partition from hd0 to /mnt and issuing "grub-install --root- directory=/mnt (hd0)". * The dedicated grub partition will just need maintainance free chainloader menu.lst entries. * Grub on a read-only boot media (floppy, cd, dvd, usb,...) could check the integrity of MBRs, grub and /boot partitions. ** Affects: grub (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Support for chainloadable / or /boot partitions https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252649 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
