I have the same error with a new DELL Vostro 401. I couldn't boot with any Live CD. No boot with ubuntu, and knoppix in any version. But at six time Ubuntu boot, but on new reboot fails again. I put "all_generic_ide floppy=off irqpoll" after -- in boot options and my Dell Vostro boot perfect all time, with live cd, and with hard disk.
