Could you please try running with a fresh X server configuration file
with the new kernel please? To generate this, type the following in to a
terminal:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Then edit the file with your favourite text editor, and add the
following line to the 'Device' section of your new /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

        Driver          "nvidia"

With this configuration, Xorg should load the NVIDIA binary driver and
auto-detect your display settings. If it still doesn't work, could you
please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt, and also re-
post the output of the commands I asked for above.
