For me on a ThindPad T60 (with the X1400 chip), suspend/resume doesn't work with the -ati driver, so I have to use the radeonhd driver to get widescreen resolutions.
Switching to console using radeonhd doesn't work for me, just displays a screen with what seems to be vertical and horizontal lines being added at a very fast pace at random locations. Switching back to X worked fine.
