Yes!  I found that if I ran xsane as root with sudo, it worked. 
Somehow the config for the user that was doing the scanning had lost 
permission for the 'scanner' in the there preferences, when I fixed 
that it all was OK.

P.S. sorry for the delay in getting back to you.  My ISP changed there 
SMTP server, and stop my email client from working.
