I have the same problem with a Canon LBP3360, used via USB2 (has Ethernet, too).
Debian seemingly has the same problem ( http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=468274 ): "xsane: Fails to print using CUPS" I got the problem when trying to copy a document via scanner+printer. Scanner is an Epson Perfection 1650, also accessed via USB2 and working fine. Ubuntu version is 8.04, running GNOME for this user CUPS has 2 printers installed: the Canon LBP3360 already mentioned, and a virtual PDF printer. Trying to print to the latter produced the same result: a couple of error messages about a broken pipe (three times in a row) before you get a chance to abort.
