I have the same problem with a Canon LBP3360, used via USB2 (has
Ethernet, too).

Debian seemingly has the same problem (
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=468274 ):
"xsane: Fails to print using CUPS"

I got the problem when trying to copy a document via scanner+printer.
Scanner is an Epson Perfection 1650, also accessed via USB2 and working fine.
Ubuntu version is 8.04, running GNOME for this user
CUPS has 2 printers installed: the Canon LBP3360 already mentioned, and a
virtual PDF printer.
Trying to print to the latter produced the same result: a couple of error
messages about a broken pipe (three times in a row) before you get a chance to
abort.

Installed packages related to xsane and cups:
xsane, xsane-common, and xsane-doc: 0.995-1ubunutu1
cupsys, cupsys-bsd, cupsys-client, cupsys-common: 1.3.7-1ubuntu3
cupsys-driver-gutenprint,
cupsddk-drivers: 1.2.0-0ubuntu1
hal-cups-utils: 0.6.13+svn86-0ubuntu4
cndrvcups-common: 1.70-1
cndrvcups-ufr2-uk: 1.70-1 (external package)

Best regards

Andreas
