Interestingly hdparm listed it as idle when in fact it was spinning at top speed noisiliy. I got i to spin down with the -y option.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo hdparm -C /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrom: drive state is: active/idle [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo hdparm -y /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrom: issuing standby command (Drive silent now). Next time I insert CD the racket begins again until I issue another hdparm -y. Can we have Ubuntu fix this without a manual work around?
