Interestingly hdparm listed it as idle when in fact it was spinning at
top speed noisiliy. I got i to spin down with the -y option.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo hdparm -C /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom:
 drive state is:  active/idle

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo hdparm -y /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom:
 issuing standby command

(Drive silent now).

Next time I insert CD the racket begins again until I issue another
hdparm -y.

Can we have Ubuntu fix this without a manual work around?
