In the hardy-proposed repositories there is already a newer kernel, version 2.6.24-20, which has a long changelog. I'm not sure when it will be accepted for the masses, but there is a large change it will fix your problems. Could you tell me if the new kernel completely fixes your issues, either by waiting until the update comes or by enabling hardy-proposed?
