apparently openjdk (and maybe sun-java) do need mdns in some situations; in other situations, where you do not want to have an avahi daemon installed on a (server) system, you do want to be able to install openjdk without avahi. now, ia32-sun-java depends on ia32-libs, which would make the installation of lib32nss-mdns unconditional. but assuming that ia32-sun-java is mostly installed on the desktop, we should re-add this dependency for hardy-proposed. for intrepid, it should be a recommend again (installed by default), but can be removed). another possibility for intrepid might be a change in the nsswitch.conf as discussed in the previous comment.
