I'm afraid I have no idea what's going on here; it would help if you could be more verbose about exactly what you are doing, and the *exact* message you see on the screen (don't paraphrase, don't rewrite). However, since the problem appears to be something to do with synaptic and nothing to do with initial installation (debian-installer), I'm moving the bug over there. Thanks.
