I think I discovered what the problem is--a problem with the video driver the installation CD chose for my card caused X to hang when trying to show the login screen. The installer detected the card properly, but used the following settings:
Section "Device" Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. R200 BB [Radeon All in Wonder 8500DV]" Driver "ati" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" EndSection Apparently the ati driver doesn't work reliably with the All in Wonder 8500DV. Only sometimes will X start. I can confirm this with the Kubuntu live CD. I installed the xorg-driver-fglrx package and changed the driver to fglrx and have not had any more problems. Can anyone take a look at this ati driver?
