Jamie, there was nothing else installed, nothing but clean Ubuntu HH beta. When final HH was released I simply reinstalled the notebook from scratch (to be sure this bug doesn't propagate through the update) and it "fixed" it, so now the notebook is running 8.04.1 without any troubles.
This bug can be closed. It was most probably caused by some update that didn't make the beta version happy (see that it got broken after an update) - but the final release doesn't suffer from that.
