Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dosfstools

OS version: Ubuntu 8.04.1
SW version: dosfstools 2.11-2.3ubuntu1, mkdosfs/mkfs.vfat command

The manpage states that FAT12/16 is the default created FS when no -F option is
given. It is incorrect in this version, according to the FS header, it will be
FAT32... tried with 1 GB and 2 GB SD media cards.
The lines:
      -F FAT-size
Specifies the type of file allocation tables used (12, 16 or 32
bit). If nothing is specified, mkdosfs will automatically select between 12
and 16 bit, whatever fits better for the file system size. 32 bit FAT (FAT32
format) must (still) be selected explicitly if you want it.

Shold be corrected, it IS a problem for eg. users of music players or
digital cameras with only FAT12/16 support (there are still new models
that can't use FAT32).
