Okay, I wrote down the ouput. This is from the recovery mode cosole:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# reboot
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# init: rcS-sulogin process (4037) killed by signal 15.
* Stopping GNOME Display Manager
* Stopping Common Unix Printing System: cupsd
* Stopping System Tools Backends system-tools-backends
* Stopping Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon: avahi-daemon
* Stopping Hardware Abstraction Layer hald
* Stopping system message bus dbus
* Stopping HP Linux Printing and Imaging System
* Shutting down ALSA...
* Terminating all remaining processes...
* Unmounting temporary filesystems...
* Will now restart
[17179661.268000] Restarting System.

And that's it, it just hangs there.

Just to note, I've heard of this problem happening not only on i386 but also
on PowerPC computers. There are similar bugs like this on launchpad, which
you've probably already noticed; they're mostly here i guess:

thanks for all your help.
