Can you add more details please, for example, what version on ubuntu are you using.... upgrading to hardy heron may solve the problem. Also, what is the desktop environment you use? It, I assume is gnome... The problem might be with synaptics for gnome... but i cant be sure and neither can the developers unless you provide more details!!
