I have a similar problem. When printing, the job seems to print
successfully, but the job is left pending in the print queue with status
"processing". When I try to cancel the job from the print queue, I get
the message: There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-
error-not-possible'. The printer is a HP C4180 and is connected directly
to my computer. I'm running Kubuntu Hardy, It worked flawlessly in
Feisty and Gutsy, but was broken in Hardy. I have to restart the printer
to clear the print queue.

>From the cups error log, the only thing that seems unusual is the message
"D [13/Aug/2008:20:37:46 +0200] [Job 49] prnt/backend/hp.c 496: unable to
connect hpssd socket 2207: Connection refused"
