I did the same thing... I added the 3rd party repository for AWN from
the AWN offical website...

Then Hardy decided it would include  AWN in the offical Ubuntu
Repositories because so many users installed it manually.

Now, itstead of putting blame .... how about a work around? \

Below is what I did to fix this problem. First you need to fix the
BROKEN apt-get  / dpkg manager by running.

sudo apt-get remove libawn-bzr awn-core-applets-bzr avant-window-
navigator libawn0 awn-manager  python-libawn-bzr

Now, remove your OLD awn /etc/apt/sources.list entry (if you had it
inserted), because now AWN is in the Ubuntu repositories.

Then update sources:

sudo apt-get update

Next, install AWN via regular hardy UBUNTU respoitories.

sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator

Or alternative installers via the link below.
