Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debhelper

this is not a bug but rather a feature request.

it would be nice if debhelper offered the possibility to do variable
substitution on a list of files.
it seems like currently only the control file gets this feature, and i see no
good reason for this limitation.

in fact for packages where you have a need to set a version number in a
maintainer script you have to resort to sed.
i realize that this can be done somewhat compact in ~8 lines or so of semi-ugly
shell code, but i still think this would be a useful feature for other people.

forward to upstream if you like.

** Affects: debhelper (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
