I would second this as an issue. I have a Thinkpad 600E (P2 400) running Xubunt Edgy. Thanks to this bug and advice, I have had to increase the buffer for the audio engine to be able to listen a CD. The CD would play but would drop out every 2 seconds for a second and then keep playing. Increasing the audio buffer four-fold solved the problem.
On the other hand, my Dell Latitude CPx (P3 500) has the same settings and plays CDs without the drop outs.
