CORRECTION:

hardy installs fine, but udev fails to re-install:

$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall udev

Setting up udev (117-8) ...
mknod: `/lib/udev/devices/ppp': Operation not permitted
dpkg: error processing udev (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 udev
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

So this error persists.
