Yesterday I learned that there is another player involved
in determing keyboard layout:
  /etc/scim/config

Could someone put a definitive documentation
of what files are to be configured and how from the following set:
{
  /etc/scim/config
  /etc/X11/xorg.conf
  /etc/default/console-setup
  /etc/hal/fdi/policy/x11-input.fdi
}

The page
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha4
says:
   "...
   you have set the keyboard model as Generic - evdev managed
   keyboard in the GNOME keyboard configuration.
   ..."
But what about other variants of Ubuntu, such as Xubuntu, Kubuntu?
