I've just started running this Intrepid kernel (and all the broken
video and sound stuff), according to dmesg:

[ 0.000000] Linux version 2.6.27-1-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version
4.3.1
 (Ubuntu 4.3.1-9ubuntu1) ) #1 SMP Sat Aug 23 23:19:01 UTC 2008 (Ubuntu 2.6.27-1.
2-generic)

Rebooting from the panel "restart" menu was a frequent cause of the hang, and
I tried that (once) without problems.

HOWEVER, as noted above, this Opteron 165 box (ASUS A8N-VM CSM) was upgraded to
BIOS level 1007,
after which the hang did not recur. Ergo, I'm really not the best person to
judge the success
of the new kernel.
