It turned out that I needed to change something after the single hashes in grub.conf (the special debian stuff in the comments) to make sure that the installer would know what to do. I don't have time right this minute to check it out, but I think it should be fairly obvious what it was I needed to change. If not then please post another message and I will check it out properly and let you know.
