Thanks for your report. The MSN personal status message feature is not supported in the version of Pidgin included in Ubuntu 8.04. It is, however available in the latest version of Pidgin (2.5.0) which is likely to be available soon from the hardy-backports software repository (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/hardy-backports/+bug/260070)
