For the history: I experienced the same probem not on Ubuntu but CentOS 5.2. So I tried Fedora 9 and the hang/lockup problem disappeared. However the display isn't good: In MythTV I can see the refresh line ; same playing any videos in mplayer (phenomenon similar to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_tearing)...
So I installed Ubuntu (mythbuntu to be more accurate) 8.04-1. Problems disappeared : perfect quality video. Yesterday I upgraded to the latest intrepid : which installed intel driver 2.4.1 and kernel 2.6.27-2.... Still no crash problem, but the tearing I experienced in Fedora 9 is there. When you have fast side motion you can see the refresh line it looks awful.
