VLC has been updated to 9.x branch. The 0.8.6 version is reported to have "widely published security issues" according to one VLC dev and it is critical to update: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.videolan.vlc.general/14603 I am not marking this bug as a security vulnerability as I do not have specifics about those issues. A more knowledgeable dev can escalate this if need be.
