Pedro It worked for another user. After a reboot, everything looks fine. I did not mention that all my desktop icons lso went missing and the right-click on desktop was not working or showing a menu.
I guess meta-gnome is the natural choice for anything broken with gnome, when you don't know which package is the problem. sorry about that. The reason I opened a bug report and not mailed the forum was because I want to emphasize that such things should never happen *especially when a user has not tinkered with any settings*. Imagine this for a corporate desktop when you login to do some critical urgent work and all your icons and desktop links dissappear. The Issue is not about if there was a workaround that resolves the matter by asking a few questions on the forum (that may involve hours to research for an unfamiliar user, or being forced to reboot) . A user should never have to encounter such a basic problem. I think most people will appreciate it if no matter what is broken, the desktop and basic functions always work. I run Ubuntu 8.0.4 Gnome 2.22.3. Thanks for your time, and I hope something can be done about this. PS: What is the correct package for this? I mean which of the 100+ packages do I start researching to locate where the fault lies? (mind you I was a www.linuxfromscratch.org user in 2003-2005 and I am not averse to it :) ). And honestly do you think a windows user migrating to Linux will research this? ( wink ;) [ all in good humor] ) Cheers On Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 12:05 AM, Pedro Villavicencio <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > thanks for the report, does it works with another new user? which > version of ubuntu are you running? and btw just a quick answer, where > did you read that meta-gnome2 is the package for filling bugs about that > in ubuntu? we are getting a few bugs here which have nothing to do with > the package and it would be nice to see where people is reading that, > thanks you. > > ** Changed in: meta-gnome2 (Ubuntu) > Importance: Undecided => Low > Status: New => Incomplete > > -- > wallpaper dissapeared, not being applied > https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/264800 > You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber > of the bug. > > Status in "meta-gnome2" source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete > > Bug description: > Binary package hint: gnome > > Something strange has happened after the latest update today. > > My wallpaper is missing in gnome and I am unable to change any in Preferences > > Appearance > Background > select wallpaper > close.
