I agree, I had to sort this out for my brother who was complaining Ubuntu had eaten the space on his flash card.

Another option would be to have two numbers whereever the free disk space is displayed:
x mb free, y mb used by trash

This would be enough to send users hunting for the 'EmptyTrash' command.
